CoQ10 is a powerful antioxidant and a nutritional energizer. It is essential for the production of cellular energy. It is highly recommended for people taking statin drugs to lower blood cholesterol levels.
In a Swedish study, patients with advanced heart failure were found to have lower plasma CoQ10 levels than subjects with mild degrees of heart failure. The study found that daily supplementation with 100 mg of CoQ10 resulted in improvement of physical activity, and quality of life as compared to the placebo-group.
Several studies revealed a significant decrease in CoQ10 serum levels as a result of treatment with cholesterol lowering statin drugs. Simultaneous administration of CoQ10 with statins resulted in a statistically significant increase in CoQ10 blood levels without opposing the lipid-lowering effect of the statin drug.
Dosage-Typical dose is 50 to 150 mg per day. For chronic heart failure, it is recommended to take 100 to 300 mg a day, preferably in divided doses.
